Recall

... as much as you can from your first few years of school: kindergarten, first, and second grades. Jot down in a bullet list any memories or snippets of memories that come to mind, along with any feelings or expectations you had at the time.

The list may come in handy when you get brave enough to write your life history, or it will just induce a smile or two. If you have kids in any of those grades, they'd love to hear your stories. Come back and share your favorite memory!

P.S. I guess my verb last week was "Take ... a week off." : )

  1. I've been going to free lunch in Logan ... cafeteria food brings back a bunch of school memories. We had moniters to make sure we ate our food. They made me so nervous.

  3. Red lipstick reminds me of my friend Laquisha that I had in 1st grade. She brought some to school in a brown lunch bag and hid it like it was stolen money. Then she very secretly shared it with me under the jungle gym on the playground during recess and told me not to tell. I don't think her mom knew she had it. I remember feeling like I was mature, pretty, and uncomfortable. After about an hour when the luxury wore off I remember thinking, "What's all the hype about? No one cares about makeup anyway!"

  4. Most memorable for sure was quiet game time when innocent lil' me learned how to play strip poker with her best friend Kristi and our best "boy friends" Zach and David. Zach had overheard his dad talking about a "party game..." Sounds so grownup. Lets try it we all whispered to each other. Sooo....whats the point to the game? How stupid to take your clothes off. Why is the teacher so mad? Uh oh...Mom's on her way to school. Zach...tell your dad this is a stupid game.

  5. My son--who just finished 2nd grade--offered this as a favorite memory: "We voted for our new school colors and a mascot--hawk, cougar or moose. I voted for the hawk becasue it's fast and barely any animals can get it. The cougar won, and that's cool too."

  6. Funny that in my list a few memories related to 80s TV shows:
    * I knew just when to walk to Kindergarten since it was just as "The Price is Right" started
    * I was SURE my 1st grade teacher was actually Laverne from "Laverne and Shirley"
    * We had a aide in 2nd grade named Miss Roscoe--but we called her "Miss Rascoe Peco Train" (at least that's how I've spelled it in my mind, I just searched for the spelling online and found out the "Dukes of Hazard" sherriff was actually Rosco P. Coltrain).

  7. *Being pretty excited that my kindergarten school room was right next to the bathroom AND the drinking fountain. Telling my older sisters who weren't equally impressed.
*Playing on the monkey bars so long that I rubbed my palms raw.
*Totally loving the treasure box my first grade teacher let us pick from when we did something...but what I can't remember.
*Sincerely looking forward to the day that I got to pass along the "lunch stick" that rotated between classes and signaled it was time to go to lunch.
*Getting in trouble with my second grade teacher when she was upset with the class about something and asked "who doesn't know what that means?" and I raised my hand because I didn't hear her say "doesn't". It was obviously a rhetorical question.
