Check

... a lingering to-do item off your list. Let's say you have some carpet in your house. And, say, you've been meaning to have it steam-cleaned since--oh, last October. But, you haven't called anyone because you have a hard time paying what they charge. Then, let's say you borrowed your parents' steam-cleaner to do it yourself. And said vacuum has been staring you down from the corner of your bedroom for the last 2 1/2 weeks. This is your--okay, MY--chance to do it! Our motivation!

Do that thing on your to-do list you've been avoiding ... fixing that door that doesn't shut right, cleaning the garage, writing your thesis ... Then, come back to check it off and tell us how why you were procrastinating and how it feels to have it done.

  1. The whole carpet scenario was purely hypothetical, right? ;-)

Well, taking inspiration from the "hypothetical carpet", I went the extra mile cleaning the master bathroom today and actually scrubbed the grout between all the tiles. Vertically AND horizontally. I'm not totally sure, but I think that might've been the first time I've done that (queue embarrassed look). By the way it exhausted me, I think it might be a long time before I do it again.

  2. I've been putting off packing up my duffel bag of gear I'm going to be bringing home in less than two weeks. Still haven't done it yet, but will soon. . . At least in the next two weeks:)

  3. I don't know about you people but I don't ever put anything off so therefore don't have anything to check off a list. Nope, I haven't put off anything like returning a shirt to the store, or editing my thesis proposal, or trying out a recipe that I cut out months ago, or a washing a comforter, or reviewing transcripts for my professor, or...

  4. Every time my mom comes to my house I do one of these items. I'm not kidding. Jen- you know what I mean. In fact today she came by with hydrochloric acid to help me get the calcium at the bottom of the toilet. Her idea of course. What would I do without her!

  5. Eliza, I know what you mean about your mom. I really admire her "get-it-done" attitude. By the way, I'm still working on the steam-cleaning. I've prepped the area (moved furniture, vacuumed) twice, but when I get down to putting water in the steamer, something "comes up." Like, an ice cream tour at the local creamery or a bike ride. I'm going to do it before the next blog post just to avoid the embarrassment.

  6. I called my brother, and I still have to return the two right-hand gloves I bought from Home Depot which have been sitting by the door for weeks. No receipt. I just don't like the mean curly-haired lady at the returns desk, and think she may give me a hard time. The most interesting thing about this assignment has been figuring out why these things have been on my list for months. I'm not a procrastinator. Generally not lazy. Just scared of the curly-haired lady.

  7. I cleaned out my garage(again) so I could fill it up with the next room's stuff. Did anyone warn me about how much work it really is to paint all your baseboards? I don't think so. It's a lot more organized this time though and there's two big boxs of goodwill stuff. That feels good!

  8. I did at least one thing on my list but probably added about 4 more. Does it ever end? But it did feel good to cross things off an actual list which I have not written in a very long time.

  9. Okee Martins--that's the dirty little secret no one at Home Depot tells you. Their official statement regarding painting baseboards: "You can do it ... but, it will take at least four times as long as you initially predicted with three more trips to the store for another paint brush--because your dog got a hold of the first one--and more caulk, then more caulk and finally more paint."
